About the museum
The Iðnaðarsafnið (Industrial Museum) in Akureyri goes back to a collection begun by Jón Arnþórsson in 1993, and it was formally founded on 17 June 1998. Jón and his wife, Gisela Rabe-Stephan, ran the museum for a long time on their own, with grants from public bodies, funds, associations and companies. Friends' associations were founded in 2005 and 2006.
The museum began with machines and manufactured goods from the factories of Sambandið (the Icelandic Cooperative Society) at Gleráreyrar, and later expanded with objects from other manufacturers in Akureyri. In 2000 it moved from the former factory building of Hekla to Sjafnarhús on Austursíða. In 2002 it was recommended that the museum remain independent, and the town made available the former tool house of the environmental department at Krókeyri. The museum opened there on 1 May 2004.
Here you can see machines and tools from old Akureyri factories, such as margarine machines, printing presses, lathes, sewing machines and watchmakers' tools, as well as packaging and products from Saxbauti, Santos coffee and Flóra margarine. On the upper floor is an exhibition on clothing and shoemaking in Akureyri in the 20th century. The museum is small and homely, and new objects are constantly being added.
