About the museum
The Akureyri Art Museum opened on 29 August 1993, the anniversary of the town of Akureyri. The idea of an art museum for the town first appeared in an article by Jónas frá Hriflu in the newspaper Dagur in 1960. The museum's first director was Haraldur Ingi Haraldsson, who held the post until 1 June 1999.
The museum is in the Listagil arts district, in a building that once housed KEA's dairy, which operated there from 1939 to 1980. The building was designed by Þórir Baldvinsson, an architect at the Sambandið co-operative, and was built from 1937 under the influence of the Bauhaus and functionalism. The museum's west hall was originally a cheese store, added to the building at the end of the Second World War.
The museum holds exhibitions of contemporary and older art, Icelandic and foreign, and works from the collection are shown regularly. The museum has published books in connection with many of its exhibitions. Alongside the exhibitions it offers guided tours, family tours and education programmes, and it rents out Ketilhús for events.
