About the museum
The Mótorhjólasafn Íslands (Icelandic Motorcycle Museum) was founded in 2007 in memory of Heiðar Þ. Jóhannsson, known as Heiddi. He died on 2 July 2006 in a motorcycle accident in Öræfi, on his way home from the Sniglamótið (Sniglar motorcycle meeting) at Hrífunes. Icelandic bikers regarded him as one of the best riders in the country, and he could handle any bike.
Heiðar had collected motorcycles and related items for many years and wanted to open a museum. Well over twenty bikes and a large number of motorcycle-related objects are associated with him. The memorial section of the museum displays and preserves his bikes and belongings.
The museum holds many valuable items and offers to preserve bikes and objects related to the history of motorcycling in Iceland. Every year an exhibition is held on Icelandic motorcycle culture, on people or on specific topics, and details are published on the museum's Facebook page. The support association Tían supports the museum.
