About the museum
The Safnahúsið on Egilsbraut in Neskaupstaður houses three museums under one roof. The natural history museum was founded in 1965 and moved into the building in 2006. It shows the nature of East Iceland, including most Icelandic birds, a fish collection, shells, Icelandic mammals, stones and a collection of plants and insects.
The maritime and craft museum of Jósafat Hinriksson is based on a collection that Fjarðabyggð received from the heirs of Jósafat in 2000. It covers fishing, ironwork, boatbuilding and old craft methods, and includes a replica of his father's forge. The museum is housed in an old warehouse.
The Tryggvi Ólafsson art museum opened in September 2001 on the ground floor of the building. It holds the largest collection of works by the artist, who comes from Norðfjörður, and a new exhibition of his works is set up every year.
