Limited operations. A mudslide in December 2020 destroyed a large part of the museum's buildings. The exhibition is in the old engineering works, and a new basic exhibition is planned for Angró.

About the museum

Tækniminjasafn Austurlands was formally founded in 1984, and its first exhibition opened in 1995 to mark the centenary of the town of Seyðisfjörður. The museum is dedicated to technological development in East Iceland from around 1880, including machinery, electricity, communications, transport and buildings. For a long time it was housed in the Wathne estate (Wathnestorfan) in Seyðisfjörður, including Wathne House and the engineering workshop of Jóhann Hansson.

On 18 December 2020 a major mudslide (aurskriða) fell on Seyðisfjörður. It swept away many houses, including a large part of the museum's buildings, and much of the collection was destroyed, although some items were saved. The museum has since reviewed its activities and policy and continues to save what remains of the collection.

The museum has not yet moved into new premises and says that some years will pass before it does. Meanwhile the exhibition “Búðareyri – saga umbreytinga” (Búðareyri – A History of Change) is open to visitors in the old engineering works in Seyðisfjörður. In autumn 2026 the rebuilding of Angró by the lagoon began; the building is to house the museum's new basic exhibition. The museum has also set up cairns (vörður) at three places in the town, which address the seasons, community, youth and nature.
