About the museum

The Antiquarium di Cropani is housed in the Santa Caterina d’Alessandria monumental complex in the historic centre of the town. The church dates to the early 16th century and was restored after the earthquakes of 1638 and 1783; the complex also includes the oratory of Sant’Anna and an old kiln.

The display unfolds over two levels. On the ground floor, eleven panels illustrate the geomorphology of the central Ionian area and its main archaeological sites, from Sellia Marina to Sersale and from Cropani to Botricello and Marcedusa. Upstairs, linked to the now deconsecrated oratory of Sant’Anna, six display cases arrange the finds in chronological order, from prehistory and protohistory through the Greek, Hellenistic, Roman and early medieval periods.

Two display cases are devoted to Greek finds of the late Archaic period from a sacred area dating to the 6th–5th century BC at Acqua di Friso, in Cropani Marina. Other material comes from early Christian places of worship, including the basilica of Botricello, dating to the 6th–8th century AD.
