About the museum
The museum opened in 1879 inside Villa Margherita (also known as Villa Trieste), Catanzaro's historic public garden, and is considered the oldest museum institution in Calabria.
The exhibits trace the different phases of the civilisations of the area from prehistory to the Middle Ages. The prehistoric collection includes tools and weapons from the Stone Age, the Iron Age and the Neolithic. The numismatic collection contains more than 8,000 ancient and modern coins, from the Greek period to the modern age. Among the most interesting pieces are the bronze fragments of a Roman equestrian statue depicting Manio Megonio Leone, a notable from Petelia, today's Strongoli. Interactive and audiovisual multimedia tools help visitors understand the route.
