About the museum
The site, known as the Casale dei Bagni, was built as a thermal complex in the Republican period and considerably enlarged between the times of Trajan and Hadrian. In the past it was believed to have been a villa of the emperor Trajan. It was in use until at least the end of the 5th century AD.
The area, covering about two hectares north of Civitavecchia in the direction of Tolfa, includes a botanical garden with ancient plant species. In 2026 the site is subject to consolidation, restoration and enhancement works financed by the PNRR (Italy's National Recovery and Resilience Plan) and overseen by the Soprintendenza per la provincia di Viterbo e per l'Etruria meridionale (heritage authority for the province of Viterbo and southern Etruria); it is managed by the Direzione regionale Musei nazionali Lazio (regional directorate of the national museums of Lazio).
