About the museum
The museum opened in 1954 and was later reorganised in the former convent of the Augustinian Fathers at the Sughera sanctuary, an early 16th-century building specially restored for the purpose; the new venue opened in April 2001. The complex now also houses the municipal library.
The collection presents archaeological finds from the area, arranged chronologically and topographically. The oldest materials date from the late Bronze Age (11th–10th century BC). The main part of the route is devoted to the Etruscans and includes the grave goods from the necropolises of Pian Conserva, Ferrone, Pian dei Santi and the Grottini di Rota. One section is also dedicated to the medieval period.
Among the most interesting elements is a scale reconstruction of a burial chamber with finds from tomb no. 19 of the Ferrone necropolis, dating between the mid-6th and mid-5th century BC and discovered in 1995.
