About the museum
The Antiquarium is housed in the premises attached to the Romanesque parish church of Sant’Appiano, in Barberino Val d’Elsa. It collects finds from various excavation campaigns carried out since the late 19th century in the areas of Sant’Appiano, San Martino ai Colli and Semifonte, a territory densely inhabited since the 8th century BC. The museum was set up in 1991.
The first room holds part of the funerary goods from princely Etruscan tombs discovered by chance in 1907 at San Martino ai Colli, with objects dating from the 7th to the 2nd century BC, Attic red-figure pottery and Hellenistic alabaster urns decorated with scenes from Greek myth. The second room contains a sandstone sculpture of a putto riding a dog, recovered during the late 19th-century excavations that also brought to light the foundations of the baptistery in front of the church.
The medieval and Renaissance periods are represented by pottery found near Semifonte, the castle destroyed by Florence in 1202, and by a panel with the Madonna and Child with saints by the Master of Signa, the only painting on display.
