About the museum

The museum is housed in the medieval Palazzo Pretorio of Poggibonsi and is named after Francesco Costantino Marmocchi. It opened in November 1997 on the initiative of volunteers from the “F.C. Marmocchi” Laboratory, with the support of the Comune. The paleontological collection originated from a donation by the volunteer members.

The route is divided into sections on paleontology, human evolution, archaeology and the natural history of the area. Among the exhibits are fossils from the Valdelsa and Valdarno, animal bones, the skeletal remains from the Neolithic tomb of the Cucule di Staggia and panels with casts on the evolution of our species. There are also models showing how the landscape of the Valdelsa has changed over the last ten million years.

The museum’s website has long reported a closure for reorganization. In the past it was open on Sunday afternoons with free admission, and guided visits were available on request.
