About the museum
The Romituzzo sanctuary stands just outside Poggibonsi, in a place named after the hermits’ cells and “romite” (small hermitages) that existed before the 14th century. A tabernacle housed an image of the Madonna and Child known as the Madonna della Neve, the work of a Sienese painter. Popular devotion led in 1460 to the construction of an oratory with a loggia; the church was built in 1550, and the brick bell tower dates from around 1570. In the mid-16th century, following miracles attributed to the image, the sanctuary reached the height of its splendour.
The walls of the church are lined with a collection of ex-votos: over 5,000 anatomical figures in papier-mâché, dating from the 16th century onwards, and about 90 painted votive tablets, which are preserved and restored in the sanctuary. It is one of the richest expressions of popular religiosity in the Poggibonsi area.
