About the museum
The Museo Antiquarium di Spilamberto was established by the Municipality with a resolution of the town council of 29 September 1997. It is located on the ground floor of the Torrione Medievale, in Corso Umberto I, and holds the collections owned by the Municipality as well as materials owned by the State. The museum displays finds recovered from the bed of the River Panaro, in the territories of Spilamberto and San Cesario, dating from the Palaeolithic to the modern age.
Erosion caused by recent floods has exposed numerous prehistoric and historical sites. The display is organised around three main phases of settlement and includes material from the Palaeolithic and Mesolithic, remains of Neolithic settlements, a Copper Age necropolis with 39 burials, two Bronze Age Terramare settlements (Podere Castelletto and Cave di Ponte del Rio), and two warrior tombs of the Iron Age, dating to the 4th–3rd century BC.
The Roman period is documented by rural settlements, a centuriation (Roman land division) with a double orientation, and wells with well-preserved organic materials, one of which has been partly reassembled in the rooms. For the medieval period, a Lombard necropolis of about forty burials is on display, including three horse burials, as well as the remains of the Ospitale di San Bartolomeo, with two pilgrim burials marked by scallop shells.
