About the museum
The museum was founded in 1978 on the initiative of the local researcher Augusta Redorici Roffi and the Gruppo Vignolese Ricerche, with the aim of preserving the geo-palaeontological finds of the area. Since 1995 it has been run by volunteers of the Associazione “AL Palèsi”, who look after public opening, educational and laboratory activities, research projects with schools and universities, publications and lectures.
The palaeontological route presents fossils in general and then the finds from the province of Modena: Pliocene molluscs from Vignola and Marano sul Panaro, crabs, a rare tapir jaw, whale remains and shark teeth, as well as Cretaceous material from the Modena Apennines, such as ichthyosaur remains, ammonites, corals and sponges. Among the rarest pieces are the crustacean Coleia appenninica and the trace fossil Atollites; the collection of Arsenio Crespellani, with fossils and rock samples, is also present.
The geo-mineralogical route illustrates igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks and minerals from the area between the Reno and Secchia rivers, such as quartz, calcite, barite and pyrite, together with setarie and ophiolitic minerals, and a small section on rocks and minerals used in everyday life and in local industry. A brief section is devoted to palaeoanthropology.
