About the museum
The antiquarium in Via del Seminario, in the centre of Trieste, preserves a stretch of the walls of the Roman colony of Tergeste, on the slope of the San Giusto hill. The walls were built between 33 and 32 BC, when Octavian had not yet taken the title of Augustus, to defend the colony.
Between the mid-1st and the 2nd century AD the enclosure lost its defensive function and was reused as part of a system of terraces on the slope facing the sea. The visible section is about 4 metres long and 2.4 metres wide, with facing of sandstone blocks and a core of sand and stones; a drainage channel runs along its base.
Next to the walls, a room with a herringbone-pattern floor (opus spicatum) containing amphora fragments has been discovered; it is interpreted as a tank for processing olive oil. The site is managed by the heritage authority (Soprintendenza Archeologia, belle arti e paesaggio del Friuli-Venezia Giulia).
