About the museum
The antiquarium is located in via di Donota, behind the Roman theatre, in the upper part of Trieste’s historic centre. Here stood Tergeste, the Roman city founded around the middle of the 1st century BC between the hill of San Giusto and the sea. The theatre, built a few decades later against the slope with a capacity of about 3,500 spectators, is still visible in the urban fabric.
The museum combines an excavation area with a small display space set up in a tower of the medieval walls. It is run by the Soprintendenza Archeologia, belle arti e paesaggio del Friuli Venezia Giulia (regional heritage authority) and holds finds from the excavations of the Roman theatre area.
