About the museum
The Museo commerciale di Trieste opened in 2005, to mark the 250th anniversary of the Camera di Commercio, on the piano nobile of Palazzo Dreher in via San Nicolò. The building, owned by the Camera di Commercio, was designed in 1909–1910 by the Viennese architect Emil Bressler and adapted in 1928–1929 by Gustavo Pulitzer-Finali to house the Borsa Nuova.
The rooms hold documents and objects on the history of the Camera di Commercio di Trieste, founded in 1755 under Maria Theresa of Austria, and on the city’s commercial activity. Among the exhibits are the instruments used for official inspections of goods, a commodity testing laboratory and a section on the sea and the port.
Part of the display also houses the Museo del Caffè di Trieste, founded in 2001 and made up largely of objects donated by private individuals, which tells the story of the city’s role in the coffee trade and processing.
