About the museum
The Plunacker site, near the centre of Villandro, was discovered by chance in 1976 during excavation work. In the 1980s the Ufficio beni archeologici (Office for Archaeological Heritage) of the Province of Bolzano uncovered several buildings, and in 2009 the area was opened to the public as an archaeological park.
The Archeoparc covers about 1,600 m² and protects, under a roof, the remains of four buildings from the Roman and medieval periods. The finds from the Plunacker field and its surroundings span about 7,000 years, from the Mesolithic and Neolithic through the Bronze Age to the Roman period.
The permanent exhibition of finds, including amphorae and combs, is in the school building in Santo Stefano, the main village of the municipality. The site is considered one of the most important in the Alpine region and lies about 12 km from the Archeoparc Velturno.
