About the museum
The Dorfmuseum Gufidaun is in Gudon, a hamlet of Chiusa, in the Pfleghaus, the yellow-fronted building next to the parish church of St. Martin. Gudon was the seat of a court from 1220, and the Pfleghaus housed the official who administered justice. In 1886 the owner Josef Kröss gave the house to the municipality; for this reason the building is also called Krösshaus.
The museum, opened in 2000, is devoted to the everyday culture of the village in pre-industrial times. Its rooms contain farm implements, household utensils and craft tools. The route spans several floors: in the cellar, food preservation and the production of local wine are shown; on the ground floor is the smoke-blackened kitchen, the “Rußkuchl” (soot kitchen), with its original Gothic vault, together with a peasant bedroom and the Stube (traditional living room), which has a corner dedicated to the painter Josef Telfner; on the first floor a complete cobbler's workshop is on display; in the attic are old farm tools and the most recently acquired objects.
The collections also include sacred and secular art, a mineral room, a votive panel from 1750, a furnished early 20th-century schoolroom and the Feiler epitaph of 1761. Each year the museum presents a theme exhibition on rural life about a century ago. After the guided tour, the permanent archaeological exhibition “Schatzkasten Erde” can also be seen in the neighbouring Hohes Haus, which is a separate site.
