About the museum
The Archeoparc Velturno marks the site of an excavation carried out over about twenty years in Via Tanzgasse, in the centre of the village. The research uncovered burial areas and traces of pottery production, showing that communities engaged in farming and livestock rearing were already living here in the 5th millennium BC.
Among the most significant finds are a megalithic complex made of large unworked stones, a standing stone (menhir), bone remains, gold objects and pottery. The finds help reconstruct the burial customs and ritual practices of the Neolithic community in the area.
The area around Velturno, from the Königsanger down to the valley floor, is rich in evidence of an ancient religious culture. In the park a small museum displays objects and finds from the Neolithic period; other material from the same excavations can be seen in the Museo locale di Velturno, housed in the castle about 240 m away.
