About the museum
The Historical Route is located in the Palazzo del Rettorato, seat of the University of Siena since 1814, and tells both the centuries-old history of the university and that of the building itself. It is part of the University's museum system (SIMUS).
The Archive holds documents produced and acquired by the University between 1560 and the 1950s. The exhibition route is arranged chronologically in six rooms, with objects and documents ranging from the foundation of the Sienese Studium to the changes of the last century.
On the ground floor the oldest and most valuable objects are displayed for their documentary value. The visit also includes the courtyard, with ancient coats of arms, the fourteenth-century funerary monument to Guglielmo di Ciliano and Niccolò Aringhieri and the monuments to students who fell at Curtatone and Montanara and in the First World War; the Oratorio della Compagnia degli Artisti, with its vault frescoed in the eighteenth century by Niccolò Franchini; and, on the upper floors, the Aula consiliare (council chamber), the historic Aula magna of 1826 and the twentieth-century Aula magna of 1939.
