About the museum
The museum houses the historical and artistic heritage of the Contrada del Leocorno, one of the seventeen contrade (districts) of Siena that take part in the Palio. It is next to the oratory of San Giovannino della Staffa, a building of 16th-century origin whose present appearance dates from works carried out from the 17th century, and it forms a single visitor route with it.
The rooms hold the Palio banners won by the contrada over time, works by Sienese artists such as Pantini, Marzi and Vanni, and by nationally known authors such as Possenti (1980) and Nespolo (2007). Among the most prized pieces is the Liberty-style Palio won in 1919 and painted by Aldo Piantini. Also on display are the masgalani, prizes awarded to the best participant in the historical procession; old costumes and those still in use (monture); sacred furnishings; a narwhal tusk and the martinella (bell) of the Carroccio of Montaperti.
In the oratory one can admire a Madonna della Pace from the late 14th century attributed to Francesco di Vannuccio, a polychrome terracotta statue of Saint John the Baptist attributed to Giacomo Cozzarelli, and frescoes with stories of the Baptist by Rutilio and Domenico Manetti. The museum also holds the pictorial heritage of the Congregazione degli Artisti, which joined the contrada in 1914.
