Retrospective of the painter Alessandro Franchi (1838–1914) with studies, drawings, preparatory cartoons and paintings, some of them unpublished. The route, through the Magazzini del Sale and the Sala del Risorgimento, follows three themes: beauty, civic commitment and sacred art.
About the museum
The Museo Civico di Siena is housed in the Palazzo Pubblico, on the Piazza del Campo, a building long associated with the city's government and still partly home to institutional functions today. Until the late 19th century the most representative rooms housed political and administrative offices; permanent opening to visitors was decided after the great exhibition of ancient Sienese art (Mostra dell’Antica Arte Senese) in 1904. The monumental rooms were opened to the public on 1 October 1907 and were reinaugurated with a new display in 1931.
The collections grew through bequests and donations and, after the suppression of religious orders and confraternities and the closure of charitable institutions, through works from churches and city institutions. In 1985 four rooms around the Cortile del Podestà housed a picture collection entrusted to the University of Siena, while since 2017 the exhibition project has linked the collections to the works in the palace.
The route, on a single level with no changes of floor, includes the frescoed rooms with Simone Martini's Maestà, the Guidoriccio da Fogliano, the Allegory and Effects of Good and Bad Government by Ambrogio Lorenzetti, the Sala del Risorgimento with works by Cesare Maccari, Pietro Aldi and Amos Cassioli, and the Galleria civica. From the palace one can also climb the Torre del Mangia, with a separate or combined ticket.
