About the museum
The museum of the Contrada Priora della Civetta is located inside the Castellare degli Ugurgieri, on Via Cecco Angiolieri. It was founded in 1984, when important spaces were opened after the restoration of derelict structures, as part of a process common to all the contrade of creating historic and architectural places in which to preserve the memory of the community. The current seat was opened in September 2017, with a significant expansion of the spaces and the entrance on Via Cecco Angiolieri.
The route through the rooms is an ideal journey through time, from the past to the present. On display are the palii and masgalani won by the Civetta, the prizes for the best parade company (comparsa) in the historical procession of the two annual Palii, together with historic costumes, sacred furnishings and other artworks and possessions of the contrada, including frescoes from the second half of the 20th century and sculptures by Sienese artists.
The contrada's oratory and stable are annexed to the museum and form an integral part of the visit. The project “Museo tra le dita” is under way, aiming to make the museum accessible to people with visual impairments.
