About the museum
The museum began as an exhibition space linked to the historical archive of Italgas, the company that has supplied gas to Turin since 1837. The first exhibition, opened in 1994, traced the history of gas, from coal distillation to methane and its uses for lighting, heating, cooking and scientific instruments.
In 2008 the exhibition was moved to the company's headquarters, where the displays were updated with multimedia and interactive elements, designed above all for school groups. Today the project is called Heritage Lab and is based in Corso Palermo in Turin.
The heritage includes a historical archive of around three linear kilometres of documents, a library of around 10,000 volumes (with antique works on the history of gas) and a collection of objects documenting the manufactured gas industry and the switch to methane. Themed routes, photographs, advertising material and oral testimonies recount production techniques, company premises and the life of the workers.
