About the museum
Monte San Martino overlooks the plain of the Alto Garda (Upper Lake Garda) at around 800–850 m above sea level, in a strategic position for communications to the north and west. The site was in use without interruption from prehistory to the modern age. From the 3rd to the 1st century BC religious rites were performed here. At the end of the 1st century BC the Romans built a large complex interpreted as a sanctuary, which remained in use until the 3rd century AD and features a monumental staircase that can still be walked today.
Between the 4th and 6th centuries AD a settlement, possibly of a military character, arose in the southern part of the ridge, with a large building, probably public, partly destroyed by fire. Later, in the same area, a small place of worship was built. The church, attested with certainty in the Carolingian period (8th–9th centuries), was modified several times, is dedicated to Saint Martin, has been mentioned since the 13th century and was used for worship until 1750.
The area was discovered in 1969. For visitors, the heritage authority (Soprintendenza) has created a route with information panels in Italian and English, rest areas and an information point. The finds are kept at the Museo Alto Garda (MAG) in Riva del Garda, while some copies can be seen at the Centro di documentazione di Pranzo di Tenno.
