About the museum
The archaeological area lies in the seventeenth-century building on the north side of piazza Labus, in the heart of Roman Brescia. Excavations carried out between 1993 and 1998 uncovered extensive stretches of the basilica's marble floor and a paved surface of the Augustan-period forum. In the Flavian period the basilica closed the south side of the forum as a monumental entrance, facing the Capitoline sanctuary to the north, and important civic functions took place there, including the administration of justice.
The route, which runs vertically through the site, makes it possible to read the successive building phases: parts of the basilica and forum, medieval walls and a selection of finds, including pottery, ornaments, architectural elements and inscriptions. In the adjoining building are the offices of the Soprintendenza archeologia belle arti e paesaggio (heritage authority for archaeology, fine arts and landscape), a small specialist library and a space for exhibitions and educational workshops.
