About the museum
The Parco archeologico di Brescia romana offers a route through the ancient city, one of the most significant and best-preserved in Italy. Together with the monastic complex of San Salvatore – Santa Giulia, it has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2011, as part of the serial site “Longobards in Italy. Places of Power (568–774 AD)”.
The area was brought to light from 1823 onwards, when a public subscription allowed the Ateneo di Scienze, Lettere e Arti di Brescia (Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts of Brescia) to begin investigations. The excavations uncovered the Capitoline temple, the Roman theatre and the deposit of large bronzes to which the Winged Victory belongs, found in 1826. In 1830 the Museo Patrio, the first of the city's museums, was opened in the restored temple.
The route includes the Republican sanctuary (early 1st century BC), with four frescoed halls on a shared podium; the Capitolium of AD 73, with opus sectile floors and the collection of inscriptions arranged in 1830; and the Roman theatre, built and enlarged between the 1st and 3rd centuries AD. In the eastern cella of the Capitolium is displayed the Winged Victory (Vittoria Alata), a 1st-century AD bronze restored by the Opificio delle Pietre Dure between 2019 and 2021 and shown in a display designed by the architect Juan Navarro Baldeweg. Since June 2023 the UNESCO Corridor (Corridoio UNESCO), a free walk of about one kilometre open to all, connects the Capitolium area to the Santa Giulia complex.
