About the museum
The Museo Piamarta was established in 2011, on the occasion of the canonisation of Giovanni Battista Piamarta (1841–1913), and was recognised by Regione Lombardia by resolution of 16 October 2018. It is named after the founder of the Istituto Artigianelli, of the Colonia agricola (agricultural colony) of Remedello Sopra and of the Queriniana printing and publishing house.
It is a house museum within the large complex of the Istituto Artigianelli, which Piamarta created in 1886 to bring young people into work through vocational training. The museum consists of the rooms in which the saint lived and of the neo-Gothic shrine that received his body at the end of his life; the spaces, still in use for their original purposes, preserve objects, furniture and furnishings kept by the religious after his death.
The institute stands in the orchard (brolo) of the former women’s abbey of San Salvatore – Santa Giulia, included in the UNESCO World Heritage list since 2011. The museum and the shrine therefore complete the reading of the monastic complex and make it possible to understand its transformations from the last quarter of the 19th century to today.
