About the museum
Carsulae arose along the Via Flaminia, between Terni and San Gemini. The first agricultural and pastoral settlements date back to the 9th century BC; from the 4th century BC the settlement began to change and was given a city wall. With the construction of the Via Flaminia the town grew considerably, partly thanks to the arrival of groups from the mountain centres nearby.
The history of Carsulae is divided into two phases, the republican and the imperial. After the 3rd century there is no further news of the town: its decline is linked to the loss of importance of the western branch of the Flaminia in favour of the eastern one. After various attempts at conquest by barbarian peoples, the town was struck by an earthquake and finally abandoned in the medieval period.
Today the area, part of which has still not been excavated, preserves the forum with the basilica and the two twin temples, the theatre and the amphitheatre, the Arch of San Damiano and some funerary monuments along the line of the road. Beside the forum stands the medieval church of Santi Cosma e Damiano, built with materials recovered from the ruins. The Centro visita e documentazione “U. Ciotti” completes the route with informational material about the site.
