About the museum
The collection is the technical collection of the former Army Arms Factory, today the Polo di Mantenimento delle Armi Leggere, and includes over 1,500 weapons produced from the 19th century to today, not only at the Terni plant.
It is housed in what was the first arms factory of united Italy, opened in 1880 as part of a policy of independence from foreign suppliers for military supplies. Terni was chosen because it had abundant hydraulic power, was far from the borders and sheltered from the guns of enemy warships. The first steelworks in Italy also arose here, able to supply the Navy with armour plates and guns.
Despite the heavy air raids the city suffered in the Second World War, and even though today the factory deals only with the repair and maintenance of light weapons, its buildings retain their original appearance. A model helps to understand the functional organisation of the plant and the use of hydraulic power.
