About the museum

The museum is in the old Seminary palace, built in 1653 at the initiative of Cardinal-Bishop Francesco Angelo Rapaccioli, who also renovated the layout of the nearby square. The project, of clearly Roman character, links the cathedral, the seminary and the Bishop's Palace in a single monumental complex made up of buildings from different periods, from the Roman amphitheatre to the church of the Carmine.

The collection was created to preserve and promote the historical, artistic and cultural heritage of the diocese of Terni-Narni-Amelia. Its core consists of paintings and sculptures from the storerooms of the cathedral Chapter and the parishes of the diocese, largely works from the 15th to the 18th century by artists such as Livio Agresti, Marten Stellaert, Francesco Cincinnato, Il Sassoferrato, Calisto Calisti, Giacinto Brandi, Girolamo Troppa and Liborio Coccetti.

In the loggia are paintings with sacrificial scenes and with the story of the prophet Jonah, attributed to the first half of the 18th century. A section of about 250 square metres is reserved for contemporary art, with works by artists such as Paolo Borghi, Bruno Ceccobelli, Ricardo Cinalli, Dino Cunsolo and Oliviero Rainaldi. The museum is named after Don Fabio Leonardis (1950–2008), formerly director of the diocesan office for cultural heritage.
