About the museum
GeoLab is a museum-laboratory devoted to popularising the Earth sciences, opened to the public in April 1999 in San Gemini. It is housed in a building that was once a hospital and church, south of the historic centre, reached from Porta Romana along Via della Misericordia.
More a laboratory than a traditional museum, it uses interactive machines to guide visitors towards observation and experimentation. The route consists of five rooms that start with the internal structure of the Earth, pass through plate tectonics, mountain building, earthquakes and volcanoes and the geodynamics of the Mediterranean and Italy, and arrive at the geology of Umbria, its fossils and the region’s main geological sites.
On the upper floor, practical workshops on fossils and rocks are held, designed for children and adults.
