About the museum
The GeoMuseo Monte Arci was inaugurated in March 2010 on the upper floor of the former convent of the Capuchin friars of Masullas, a monumental building erected shortly after the middle of the 17th century. The museum is named after Stefano Incani and grew out of the collecting and cataloguing of minerals and fossils linked to Vincenzo Incani.
The route tells the geological history of Sardinia and of the Monte Arci volcano, with rocks and minerals dating from roughly 20 million to 1.8 million years ago, fossils of ancient marine animals and dioramas reconstructing volcanic activity. The Sala dei Minerali occupies the friars’ former dormitory, the Sala Flu presents fluorescent minerals, and the Sala Vulcanica, added in 2014, explores the climate, fauna and events of the Miocene in Sardinia.
On the lower floor, temporary exhibitions, events and conferences take place, while an educational programme for schools of all levels links geology and palaeontology with the natural and traditional themes of the area.
