About the museum
The Area archeologica di Massaciuccoli Romana lies along Via Pietra a Padule, on the inland shore of Lake Massaciuccoli. Here stood a Roman complex linked to the Villa dei Venulei, built in the early 1st century AD, of which the large thermal building survives in particular, in a panoramic position towards the lake and the coast. The building along Via Pietra a Padule was discovered in 1932; occupation inside it is documented from the 1st to at least the 6th century AD. Excavations are carried out in collaboration with the University of Pisa.
The remains are now visible in better condition than in the past thanks to the “Guglielmo Lera” exhibition pavilion, a light structure of glass, wood and steel that protects them. Educational panels accompany visitors along a route on the history of the building. Inside, a small selection of finds documents the use of the area from the late 7th–6th century BC onwards (bucchero, grey ware and black-glazed pottery), everyday life in the Roman period with storage, kitchen and table vessels, oil lamps, and architectural elements such as bricks, roof tiles and nails, which allow visitors to imagine porticoes, floors and glazed windows.
