About the museum
The museum was created to showcase the history of Viareggio’s seafaring community and, more broadly, of Tuscany. It is housed in the rooms of the former fish market of Viareggio and tells the origins of the town and its maritime tradition through finds and objects arranged in thematic sections.
The sections cover shipboard equipment, the shipyards and naval history of Viareggio, seafarers including the shipwrights and caulkers, the Italian navy, the relationship between seafaring and art, model-making, fishing, navigation instruments and sailing. Particular emphasis is given to diving and underwater work: the recoveries on the seabed carried out in the twenties and thirties by the Viareggio divers of the ships Artiglio are commemorated.
The museum is named after Alberto Gianni, a diver and inventor who died in 1930 when the Artiglio sank during the recovery of a cargo of explosives. Among the ship’s relics are the helm and the propeller; many objects were donated by local associations such as “I Palombari dell’Artiglio”.
