About the museum

The Fondazione Cerratelli takes over the legacy of the Casa d'Arte Cerratelli, a theatrical tailoring workshop founded in Florence in 1914 by the baritone Arturo Cerratelli, who had in turn taken over the 19th-century theatrical tailoring workshop of Oreste Aliandri together with its heritage of costumes, patterns and papers. Over its long activity the house supplied the main Italian theatres and exported its costumes around the world, working for great directors such as Renato Castellani, Eduardo De Filippo, Luchino Visconti, Giorgio Strehler, Luca Ronconi and Franco Zeffirelli.

The foundation was established in 2005 at the wish of Floridia Benedettini, owner of the Atelier Carnet in Pisa, and of the Cerratelli family, together with the Comune di San Giuliano Terme, with the aim of preserving this memory and making it available to scholars. The archive holds about 30,000 costumes for opera, dance, drama and film, including those from several productions by Zeffirelli, such as the film Romeo and Juliet (1968), for which Danilo Donati won the Oscar for costume design.

The archive is housed in Villa Roncioni, at Pugnano in the municipality of San Giuliano Terme, where exhibitions of stage costumes alternate. Besides the costumes, the foundation holds a library with hundreds of volumes on the history of costume, paper material such as registers, letters and sketches, and the collection of historic and haute couture patterns of the Atelier Carnet. It also organises training courses on the technical and cultural skills of theatrical tailoring.
