About the museum
The area takes its name from the San Pietro degli Schiavoni district, which from the mid-15th century was home to communities of Slavic and Albanian origin gathered around a church dedicated to Saint Peter. In the early 1960s some dilapidated houses were demolished to build the new Palazzo di Giustizia (law courts); the works uncovered remains of the medieval city, some of which were partly destroyed by bulldozers.
When the works were halted, the heritage authority (Soprintendenza) carried out systematic excavations, which brought to light a block of Roman Brindisi crossed by a paved street, with remains of houses with mosaic floors, a bath complex and residential quarters dating from the late 1st century BC to Late Antiquity.
Above the finds stands the Teatro comunale Giuseppe Verdi, designed by the architect Enrico Nespega. The structure is suspended over the area, so that the archaeological remains remain accessible to visitors and scholars.
