About the museum
Muro Tenente is a large fortified Messapian settlement of about 50 hectares, halfway between Mesagne and Latiano. The settlement dates back to the 7th century BC and reached its peak in the Hellenistic period (4th–3rd century BC); its imposing walls, over 2.5 km long, gave the site its name. After the Roman conquest the site declined and was largely abandoned in late imperial times.
The archaeological park, created with European funds, extends over more than 35 hectares around a visitor centre. A path more than 2.5 kilometres long links the excavation trenches, which have descriptive panels showing the relationship between the settlement, the necropolis, the internal roads and the two fortifications. On the northern edge a Messapian house with a courtyard has been rebuilt on the foundations of a 3rd-century BC dwelling.
The site is also known for the discovery of a section of the Via Appia Antica in excellent condition. The park offers guided tours, educational workshops and living history activities.
