About the museum

The Basilica della Santissima Trinità di Saccargia is one of the masterpieces of Sardinian Romanesque art and stands in an isolated valley in the territory of Codrongianos. Already mentioned in 1112 as a Camaldolese abbey, it was consecrated in 1116 on an area considered sacred since antiquity, at the wish of the judge of Torres Costantino I, and entrusted to the Camaldolese monks, who founded a monastery there.

The building, the only intact element of the former monastic complex, is built entirely of local stone, with the alternation of dark basalt and light limestone typical of the two-tone architecture of Pisan and Tuscan influence. At a later stage the tall bell tower and the porch on the façade were added, attributed to craftsmen from Lucca. Inside, a cycle of twelfth-century frescoes is preserved.

The church was abandoned in the sixteenth century and reopened after restorations in the early twentieth century. Today it is still a place of worship, visited by people who pay for admission, and every year it is the centre of the feast of the Santissima Trinità, celebrated on the Sunday after Pentecost.
