About the museum
The museum occupies the ground floor of the “La Marmora” barracks, a building from the late 19th century erected where an ancient Aragonese castle once stood. It is dedicated to the history and memory of the Brigata Sassari, a unit recruited on a regional basis and unique for its cohesion, spirit of sacrifice and the valour it showed in operations during the First World War (1915–1918), a conflict that cost Sardinia around 13,000 dead and earned the brigade major decorations.
The soldiers’ valour is explained by the strong solidarity and sense of belonging developed among the rank and file, and by the close bond with the officers, among whom Emilio Lussu and Alfredo Graziani distinguished themselves. The route displays postcards, documents, relics, memorabilia, uniforms and photographs, and presents a striking full-scale reconstruction of a trench of the type used in the operations involving the brigade.
The photographic documentation, the collection of period weapons and uniforms, and the relics belonging to the legendary figures of the brigade are the strong points of the collection, useful for exploring the First World War and Sardinia’s contribution to national unity. The visit takes place with a guide.
