About the museum
The Pinacoteca Giovanni Spano is housed in Ploaghe in the Oratorio del Rosario, an 18th-century Dominican building. It holds 31 paintings from the collection of the canon and scholar Giovanni Spano (1803-1878), who gathered them during his many journeys among the churches and convents of Sardinia, received some as gifts or bought them, and in 1873 donated them to the parish church of San Pietro. Another 29 works are kept in the rectory.
The display is now concentrated in a single room, which also keeps the original furnishings of the Oratorio. It includes the Holy Family by the Master of Ozieri, works from the Spano donation attributed to Francesco Neri da Volterra, Domenico di Michelino, Pietro Cavaro, Paolo Coecke and Giacomo Altomonte, and the paintings of the first nucleus of the Ploaghe gallery, bought in Cagliari in 1784 by the rector Demurtas. The route begins with the portrait of Giovanni Spano by Emilio Scherer and ends with the Trinity by Francesco Pinna.
In future the municipality intends to house the entire collection in the Oratorio, also using the sacristy and the choir gallery. The visit is free but takes place only accompanied by the museum’s curator.
