About the museum
The collection gathers 42 works by Mario Sironi (Sassari 1885 – Milan 1961), made between 1926 and 1958. They are oil and tempera paintings, mixed-media works, drawings and sculptures, largely unpublished. The main nucleus comes from the donation of Mimì Costa, the artist’s companion and sole heir, to the Banco di Sardegna in the 1980s.
The works are displayed in the Palazzo del Banco di Sardegna, in Viale Umberto, in the room where the board of directors meets. The route offers a view of the artist’s development: trained in Rome alongside the Futurists and later a leading figure of Novecento Italiano, he devoted himself in the 1920s and 1930s above all to large-scale mural decoration.
The best-known work is the Allegoria del lavoro (Allegory of Labour), a preparatory study for a fresco presented at the 5th Triennale di Milano in 1933. Other works include Mosè (1933), Studio per affresco (1935), Studio per decorazione d’interni (1938) and Composizione astratta (1954).
