About the museum
The Basilica di Superga stands on the summit of the hill that overlooks Turin. It was commissioned by Duke Victor Amadeus II of Savoy as a votive offering of thanks for the victory of 1706 against the French siege, and it was built between 1717 and 1731 under the direction of Filippo Juvarra. It is dedicated to the Nativity of Mary; inside are three altarpieces and the Cappella del Voto, which holds the wooden statue of the Madonna delle Grazie.
The dome consists of two superimposed shells connected by arches, a solution with which Juvarra made the structure lighter. Beneath the high altar lies the crypt of the Tombe Reali (royal tombs), designed between 1774 and 1778 at the wish of Victor Amadeus III. It holds 68 members of the House of Savoy, including kings, princes and princesses, among them Victor Amadeus II, Charles Albert and Victor Emmanuel I.
Today the route includes the church, which is free to enter, the Tombe Reali and the Appartamento Reale with guided visits of about 45 minutes, and the climb to the dome gallery. The basilica is also linked to the memory of the Grande Torino football team. It can be reached by car, on foot, or by the historic rack tramway (tranvia a dentiera) from Sassi.
