About the museum
Around the mid-15th century Cadipietra became the administrative seat of the Predoi copper mine. Here a storehouse held everything the mining operation needed, from grain for meals to raw materials for tools and lighting. These goods, known as Pfennwerte, were given to the miners as a wage in kind, partly in place of money.
For centuries the Cadipietra granary was therefore the food store of the mine. The present building, with its characteristic red façade, was built around 1700. After mining ended in 1893 it stood empty for many years, until it was bought by the Comune of Valle Aurina in 1989. Since 2000 it has housed the Cadipietra site of the Provincial Mining Museum.
The permanent exhibition offers an overview of the mining history of the Valle Aurina and focuses on the lives of the people who worked in or for the mine. Its highlight is the original objects from the collection of the von Enzenberg family, mining entrepreneurs in the Valle Aurina. The museum also organises a guided walk through the historic centre of Cadipietra, unique in South Tyrol in its appearance and created precisely through mining activity.
