About the museum
The Mineralienmuseum Kirchler in San Giovanni in Valle Aurina is a family-run museum born from a long passion for searching for and collecting minerals. It opened in 1996 and is one of the most important mineralogical museums in the Eastern Alps.
Over 1,000 specimens are displayed on about 300 m², with more than 100 types of minerals from the Valle Aurina and the Alti Tauri, including quartz, feldspar and gemstones. Highlights include some of the largest smoky quartz crystals in South Tyrol, a reconstruction of an alpine cleft and a famous cluster of rock crystals from the Predoi mine.
A multimedia room explains how minerals form and where they are found; visitors can also watch geodes being opened. The museum has an attached shop selling minerals, jewellery and souvenirs.
