About the museum

The so-called Casa Aragonese in Fordongianus is a building dating from the late 16th to the early 17th century, on the south bank of the Tirso, in a village known since antiquity for its thermal waters and for the local red trachyte with which it is built. It represents a dwelling type typical of central Sardinia, overlaid with decorative elements from an international repertoire that reached the island through Spanish mediation.

The most striking feature is the colonnaded front portico with cylindrical shafts and decorated capitals, partly rebuilt by anastylosis. Doors and windows are decorated in the Aragonese late Gothic style with Renaissance influences: inside, one notices ogee arches and frames with lozenge-shaped reliefs, while the entrance portal shows carved stones with torus mouldings and shells and the Christological monogram.

The thirteen rooms, distributed across two residential units once joined by a corner door that was walled up towards the end of the 19th century, have built-in cupboards and benches set against the windows. The rear comprises a kitchen garden, a stable and a shelter for carts. Since December 2021 the rooms have housed wire-mesh figures by Mauro Podda depicting women engaged in household work, a tribute to the role of women in the family.
