About the museum
The museum is housed in the former church of San Domenico, a 16th-century deconsecrated building that the people of Busachi call “Cunventu” because it was part of an ancient Dominican convent. The church is itself one of the most striking places in the village.
The exhibition is divided into two sections. In the nave, traditional costumes are presented: ceremonial wedding dress, garments for major and minor feasts, everyday clothes, mourning dress and clothing for infants and adolescents. The garments are handmade in orbace and woollen cloth, with linen and cotton shirts and bodices in brocade, silk and velvet.
The second section, set up in the side chapel and the sacristy, illustrates flax processing, once a central activity for the village economy: from the plant to the finished cloth, with the raw materials of each stage and tools such as the wooden plough, mallet, flax break (gramola), distaff (conocchia), spindle, reel (aspo), winder (arcolaio), warping frame (orditoio) and loom. The route ends with linen items, some richly embroidered.
