MURATS - Museo Unico Regionale dell'Arte Tessile Sarda
Museum in Samugheo dedicated to Sardinian textile art, from popular traditions to contemporary experimentation, with fabrics, costumes and educational workshops.
Rugs, saddlebags and blankets from the Daneu-Tschinke collection, assembled in Sardinia between 1921 and 1925, together with documents, historical photographs and letters from the family archive. The collection now becomes a permanent part of the museum's holdings.
About the museum
MURATS is a permanent demo-ethno-anthropological institution, established by the Samugheo municipal administration to safeguard, study and promote textile art in all its forms, from the material and intangible roots of the past to contemporary experiments. Samugheo, in the Mandrolisai, is a centre of excellence where weaving is still a historic and economic inheritance of the community. The museum opened on 14 September 2002, and since 2022 it has been part of the Sistema Museale Allai–Samugheo together with the Civico Museo di Allai (CiMA).
The purpose-built building at the entrance to the village covers 750 square metres over two levels, with exhibition areas, an educational workshop, a library, a conference room and a bookshop. It is surrounded by an area planted with Mediterranean scrub, which frames the Pietra Sonora by Pinuccio Sciola, a gift from the artist to the museum.
The permanent collection includes tablecloths, blankets, baby linen, saddlebags, towels, bench covers, shepherds' clothing and traditional festive costumes from across the island, largely recovered from local families' trunks. Among the rarest pieces are five tapinu 'e mortu from the 18th century, funerary textiles of which only eight are known to exist in Sardinia.
