About the museum

The Museo Casa Giorgione opened on 9 May 2009, at the start of the celebrations for the fifth centenary of Giorgione's death. It is set up in the house in Castelfranco Veneto where, according to tradition, the artist painted the enigmatic Fregio (Frieze). The building lies in the historic centre, within the walls, beside the Duomo, which houses the Pala di Castelfranco (Castelfranco Altarpiece).

The museum project, which took more than four years, is based on three elements: the Pala, the Frieze of the Liberal and Mechanical Arts, and the house itself. The two works, the city's heritage, remain in their original historical and environmental context, while the museum connects them to the territory and to the era that produced them.

Around these three pivots revolve about a hundred original pieces, objects from Giorgione's time and from the Veneto area, drawn from the civic collection or bought on the antiques market, together with architectural reconstructions, some made with the contribution of artists. The display invites visitors to enter the house as guests, to breathe in the art and culture of the late 15th century. The museum also organises temporary exhibitions, educational activities and workshops.
